Come Navratri, there is a lot of dancing and singing but also fasting. Even if you are fasting, there are a lot of yummy dishes you can have over the nine days. So ditch the onion and the garlic and make these delicious dishes at home for you and your loved ones.

Sabudana Vada
Don’t think about the oil, just savour the vadas with some spicy mint chutney. This is one of the simplest dishes to make and when eaten hot, is just bliss.

Aloo sabzi
Who doesn’t like potatoes? Take some baby potatoes and just toss them up with in oil with jeera, chilli powder, turmeric powder, tomatoes (optional) and dhania. Perfect with rotis or puris.

Sabudana Kichdi
This is a simple dish to make – soak the sabudana for about 20 minutes, then heat up some oil and tadka with mild spices, peanuts and boiled potatoes. A healthy and satisfying dish.

Kheer
All festivals in India have some sweets for sure, and kheer is a great dessert for Navratri. Use less sugar, add nuts and it’s totally nutritious.

Singhare ka halwa
This dish is made by many people during Navratri. The halwa is made with water chestnut flour, jaggery or sugar, ghee, nuts and cardamom powder. It tastes best when served warm.

Fruit milkshake or salad 
Try something new with fruits! You can make a quick fruit salad with some chaat masala. Or you can make a milkshake by blitzing up some fruits with milk and honey. 

Kuttu ka dosa or puris
Usually, people make buckwheat flour puris. But this Navratri you can try making some dosas as well. Why not make a kuttu ka masala dosa? Boil some potatoes, make it into a sabzi and just roll it up in the dosa!

Lauki ki kheer or halwa
Lauki is a vegetable that many people love and it’s so versatile that you can make various desserts with it. Why not try lauki ki kheer or halwa this Navratri?

Kuttu pakodas
Another great snack to have while fasting is buckwheat pakodas. These are made exactly like the regular pakodas, minus onions. You can even dip vegetables into the batter and make them into bhajias!

Vrat ke chawal
Rice is a staple for some people and vrat ke chawal is a popular dish. Heat ghee, add the cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and cumin seeds. Then add the diced potatoes and rice. Stir fry a little before adding chilli powder, salt and water. Cover and let it cook. Serve hot.
