One should buy stones as per one’s personality. The jewellery shouldn’t overpower it. “You should not buy it just because someone else is wearing it. Today, it’s all about transparency and value,” says Varuna. A 5 carat diamond may cost up to Rs40 lakhs. However, a 5 carat Colombian emerald will be very rare and can be priceless. Here’s the low-down on some of the most expensive stones .

The Hope Diamond
It’s considered an unlucky stone and is used by Harry Winston. “There are a lot of lab treated diamonds coming into the market. Many times low quality diamonds are treated with colour and one can be misled into buying them. Buying a sapphire makes more sense,” cautions Varuna.  

The multi-coloured sapphire is doing very well today. It’s all about the value and it adds beautification.

How to rock it : Wear it with any hue, for instance in a palette of mauve, green, pink (whichever is the strongest). It is very versatile and can be worn at any time of the day. You can even pair it with black or cream. Play with shading and maintain the classic and fashion elements.

Colombian Emerald
They are very rare too. “The more the number of intrusions, the lesser is the value,” says she.

How to rock it: “They look best with a baby pink outfit. Opt for the outfit depending on your personal style. However they beautifully complement a classic embroidered outfit,” says Jani.

Burmese Rubies
It’s very difficult to find the non-treated ones. “The number of intrusions and the fire treatment are two important factors. It’s not easy to acquire a good ruby. The glass treated lab versions are good for adornment but not for collectors.  

How to rock it: “Rubies look good with one solid colour, but if you wear red rubies with a red Manish Malhotra outfit, everything merges together. Fashion and jewellery go hand in hand. Jewellery lasts you a lifetime,” she says.

Kunzite
The baby pink stones are ideal for the contemporary modern women. They are sophisticated and have a beautiful lustre that adds to freshness.

How to rock it: “Avoid wearing it on a pastel shade. Wear it with a fuchsia pink, or a brinjal purple. It looks good on someone whose personal style is a mix of classic and contemporary,” she adds.

Tanzanites
They are a good alternative to blue sapphires which people avoid wearing for superstitious reasons. They are closer to real precious colours.

How to rock it: “Team it with a black gown or a cream outfit if you are going for a modern and contemporary look,” says Varuna.
