The colour red is synonymous with mush and love. It’s a much-liked hue. But wearing it cautiously is the trick. Arshiya Fakih Eappen says, “Shades of maroon, ruby and wine don’t suit everyone. So think before you chose the colour.”

Stylist Pria Agni agrees. “It is best to tread cautiously while adopting the colour. Of course, there is the OD-ing on red dress with matching shoes and bag. This looks best on teenagers or girls in their early twenties when just about anything can and does work. I call it beginner’s luck.”

Arshiya says, “As the shade gets richer, wear it less. Wear a strappy top or bright red pumps or an accessory that stands out.”
Pria suggests, “As fashion gives way to style, red becomes more of a challenge. But there are shades of red that can work for everyone, like the darker and much richer maroon, ruby and wine.

Gowns are the rage this season. So do get at least one! Wear red with blacks, creams and browns if you want to mix and match. Red halter necks/tube tops/ wrap-arounds chemises go beautifully with both flowing silk skirts or neatly ironed raw denim skinny jeans.”

She further adds, “Use red to add just the right romantic touch in ensembles. Red accessories too are a great idea. Try a bright red patent leather clutch, red cocktail earrings or rings or red heels with your little black dress. Bright red nails and matching lipstick work magic in candlelight but then keep everything else subtle.

Red ties and matching red Pochettes on dark suits look really sharp on men who have fewer options where red is concerned.”

Designer Anita Dogre sums up, “Red works best as a single colour, be it a sari, a dress or a gown. Since it is a strong colour, it needs minimal accessories and is a sure shot head-turner. A deep red ensemble is timeless and a great mood uplifter.”
