Hartalika Teej is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated on September 18 this year. It holds great significance for married women who observe a fast to pray for the well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women fast with the hope of finding an ideal life partner. This festival commemorates the legendary love story of Goddess Parvati, who resided in the forest and fervently prayed for years to be united in marriage with Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, moved by her unwavering devotion, married her on the joyous occasion of Hartalika Teej, thus symbolizing their sacred union.

For newly married women, there are specific guidelines to follow when observing the Hartalika Teej fast.

Here are some important rules to follow to during this festival:

  • If your menstrual cycle coincides with Hartalika Teej, you are still allowed to observe the fast. However, during the puja, avoid direct contact with idols and follow the prescribed rituals accordingly.
  • Married women observing the fast should begin their day by waking up early and taking a bath during the Brahma Muhurat, which is two hours before sunrise. After bathing, they should dress in fresh attire.
  • The Hartalika Teej fast lasts for a continuous 24 hours, starting in the early morning of Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya and concluding at dawn on Chaturthi the following day. According to Hindu scriptures, during this fast, it is customary to abstain from food and water, though the type of fast (Nirjala or Phalahari) may vary.
  • Newly married women must complete the "solah shringar" ritual, which involves adorning themselves with jewelry, makeup, and applying sindoor (vermillion). They should also apply henna and wear clothing in green or red hues, while avoiding dark or black colors, symbolizing the essence of their married life.
  • On this day, devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, perform various rituals, and listen to their divine story. They offer vermillion on their foreheads, symbolizing their devotion to Goddess Parvati.
  • It's essential to perform the Teej vrat before dawn and conclude the fast by consuming the prasad (sacred offering). After breaking the fast, women can share a wholesome meal with their families.
  • On the day of the puja, it's important to cultivate a serene and joyful atmosphere in your home while steering clear of negativity. Women fasting for Hariyali Teej should also show respect and care for the elderly and maintain polite and pleasant conversations.
