This secretive hilltop fort in Rajasthan is all you need for a weekend getaway; it's only 4 hours away from Delhi

Jaipur, renowned for its rich history and beauty, is a well-known city globally. However, nestled near the Pink City lies Alwar, a place equally captivating, just 152 kilometers away from the state capital. Alwar boasts a blend of regal charm and rural allure. Among its attractions, the majestic Bala Quila stands out as a must-visit destination, especially if you're traveling from Jaipur for a weekend getaway.

The construction of Bala Quila was initiated by Alghuraji, the second son of Amer King Kakil, who erected a small fort on this hill near Alwar in 1049 AD. In the 13th century, Nikumbh added to the fort's allure by constructing the Chaturbhuj Devi temple in Garhi. It wasn't until the fifteenth century, when Alawal Khan fortified the walls of the fort, that it received official recognition as a formidable fortress.

Throughout its history, the fort underwent various additions and renovations. In 1775, Maharaja Surajmal of Bharatpur erected the temple of Sitaram Ji within the fort, along with Surajkund, a water source. Maharaj Bakhtawar Singh contributed to the fort's grandeur by constructing the Janana Mahal and Chhatri of Pratap Singh. Notable historical figures, including Mughal Emperor Babar after the Battle of Khanwa in 1527 and Emperor Jahangir, who was reportedly exiled here by Emperor Akbar, have connections to this fort. Remarkably, Kunwara Fort earned its name because it never witnessed any wars within its walls.

Expanding across a 5-kilometer expanse, the fort features six entry gates, each named after monarchs: Chand Pol, Suraj Pol, Krishna Pol, Laxman Pol, Andheri Gate, and Jai Pol. The architecture of the fort is a testament to its rich history, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. It houses a multitude of structures, including Suraj Kund, Salim Nagar Pond, Jal Mahal, Nikumbh Mahal Palace, and numerous temples. Within the fort, 51 minor and 15 large towers were strategically built for defense purposes. Notably, the fort's walls feature 446 loopholes, which were used for firing bullets.

If you plan to visit Alwar from Delhi, the journey along National Highway 48 spans 165.6 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours to complete.
