0.0 : Hello and a warm welcome to Cardiff for the Match 6 of the 2017 Champions Trophy. England will be hosting New Zealand for their second game of the group stage. The home side are the only side in the group A to win a game as all the other games have been rain affected. That means if they win tonight they are certain of a spot in the knockout stages. |
The Kiwis, on the other hand, will be really disappointed as rain played spoilsport during their game against Australia in which they were sensing victory. Kane Williamson has been leading his side from the front and he will want another good performance tonight as a defeat could put their hope of qualification for the semifinals in real doubt. Stay tuned for the toss and other updates. |
TOSS - NEW ZEALAND WIN THE TOSS AND OPT TO FIELD. |
KANE WILLIAMSON says that they will bowl. Seems a good pitch and hopes his bowlers can make use of the overhead conditions. Opines that they did well against Australia despite the no result and hopes they can keep the momentum going. Expects his side to maintain their style of positive cricket. NZ ARE UNCHANGED. |
EOIN MORGAN says that they would have bowled first as well due to the early morning start. Reveals that there is one forced change, Chris Woakes' exit to injury means that ADIL RASHID comes in. Maintains that the availability of Ben Stokes as an all-rounder allows them to play a seamer less. Maintains that Ben is fully fit for this game. Knows that a win here ensures England a semifinal spot and hopes his side can get the job done. |
Pitch Report - Nasser Hussain doing the pitch report says that there is a good covering of grass on the deck. Mentions that the pitch was covered throughout the day yesterday as it rained a lot. Feels that both the teams will play one spinner each as the boundary on one side is really short. Reckons that the captain winning the toss will opt to bowl field and ends by saying that this is the game which will be dictated by the seamers. |

20.6 : A Milne to A Hales, OUT! MILNE HAS HIS REVENGE! Decides to bowl a slower one and it pays off. Hales is rooted in the crease and looks to whip across the line but the length isn't there for the shot. It keeps a tad low too and disturbs the timber. Anderson bowls a half-volley very wide outside off, it's there to be put away but Morgan only manages a thin feather on it. Ronchi accepts it with glee and the caught behind appeal is accepted almost instantly by the umpire. The in-form captain has to go. Good passage of play for NZ here, two big wickets of Hales and Morgan in fairly quick succession. |

25.5 : M Santner to Joe Root, FOUR! A bit streaky but safe! Floated around off, Root goes for the reverse sweep but hasn't quite got hold of it. Flies over short third man and it races to the fence for a boundary. Taylor had put in a slide to mop up but his foot touched the ropes in the process. |

28.2 : C Anderson to Joe Root, Root is doing this easily. Another length ball on middle and leg, clips it through square leg for another brace. Anderson isn't bowling to his field. Brendon McCullum on air is clearly unhappy as it is a 6-3 field which means the line should be outside off. |

A fantastic batting performance from England has helped them post a good total on the board. All the English batsmen stepped out and performed well except Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan who departed cheaply. Alex Hales and Joe Root got their respective fifties but neither of them could capitalise on that. Ben Stokes missed out on his fifty by a mere two runs but the platform was well set for Moeen Ali and Buttler. |
Jos Buttler did not disappoint and he played a swashbuckling knock where he scored 61 in 48 balls. The Kiwi bowlers could hardly dominate against the home side. Corey Anderson was the most successful bowler along with Adam Milne. The former was lucky to get a couple of big wickets on freebies. The New Zealand bowled really well in the last 3 overs to keep England under 325. Seems like a total both teams would happy with. A good start from Kiwis would put the pressure back on the hosts. On most days against most teams, this would be a slice down to third man for a single. Not today as there is a man at where a proper fifth slip would be. Guptill's wild drive gets a thick slice that goes straight to Root who is stationed there. He takes the catch with ease and this is a huge blow to NZ's chances in this game. |

40.1 : Ben Stokes to C Anderson, FOUR! Slammed! A boundary for Anderson. NZ need plenty of these quickly to have some chance in this chase. Fuller length outside off, Anderson makes room and blasts this past the diving mid off fielder. The ball races to the fence for a boundary. |

Buttler takes it well and whips off the bails comfortably. Santner was well down the track and that's the second scalp for Adil. Good stuff by Buttler as he was blinded by the batsman but did really well. It's a wide but that's okay for stumpings. England romping towards a big win at the moment. |

Hales settles under the skier comfortably to send the Kiwi all-rounder on his way. That should be the game for England. Not that Anderson or NZ were threatening to gun this down in the recent few overs but for the sake of academic interests. |
Tim Southee comes out to bat. |
42.6 : L Plunkett to A Milne, FOUR! Length ball outside off, Milne pushes at it but gets an inside edge that just goes past the leg stump. Beats Buttler to his left as well as the ball goes to the fine leg fence. |

They were on top throughout. ENGLAND WIN BY 87 RUNS. |
Another one-sided game in this tournament, we're yet to have a close one. Chasing 311 was going to be tough on a two-paced surface but New Zealand did get some momentum through the Williamson-Taylor partnership after the openers didn't make much impact. However, once the NZ skipper departed, the innings capitulated quite meekly with no real fight whatsoever. In the end, they fell way short of the target. |
England's bowlers were brilliant, especially with the new ball where they executed the plans to perfection. Ball was the standout bowler as his opening spell set the tone for the innings. Plunkett helped himself to another 4-fer as he mopped up the tail to complete a thoroughly professional performance. Earlier in the day, Root along with Hales and Buttler got England to a challenging score that proved too much for NZ. |
Man of the Match, Jake Ball says that he was just trying to put the ball in the right areas and hoping something to happen. Reckons that in ODI cricket you should be ready to get hit all around the park. Informs that there was a bit of uneven bounce on the wicket which helped them. Ends by saying that they would look to beat the Aussies in the final game and progress forward with another win under the belt. |
England skipper, Eoin Morgan says that they were 15-20 runs short at the halfway stage. Reckons that with the batting line-up they have, 300 was par. Mentions that the partnership between Joe Root and Alex Hales set them the perfect base but they failed to capitalise on it. Informs that they learned from the pitch after batting first. Feels that it was two paced and the variations worked well for his bowlers. Adds that the fact that they bat till 10 helps them a lot as it boosts their confidence |
New Zealand skipper, Kane Williamson feels that restricting England to 310 wasn't a bad effort although it was a more than a par score eventually. Credits England's bowlers for doing a great job. States that he and Taylor were trying to set a base for the final assault but it didn't pay off. Opines that it was a tough surface for a new batsman to get going. Says that he failed to judge the bounce a bit and so got hit on the helmet. Accepts that his side's fate is now not in their hands due to th |
