Colleges question MU's indifferent attitude to management course

Association of Non-Government Colleges, Mumbai (ANGC) has questioned the 'indifferent' approach of University of Mumbai (MU) to the Master in Management Studies (MMS) course. All other universities, it says, conduct examinations for course.

According to MU records, the number of its affiliated colleges in 2006-2007 were 485, however, they have now gone up to 740 in 2015-2014, an increase of 32%. So has the number of colleges providing the MMS course.

According to ANGC, it has been observed that other universities conduct examination for all papers of MMS, but MU conducts examination for only three papers of the subject.

Tukaram Shiware, chairman, ANGC, said, "When the state's nine other universities can conduct examination for all papers of MMS, then why can't MU conduct examination for all the papers? If out of 32 papers exam for 29 papers are conducted by colleges, then there is a doubt on its credentials."

University of Mumbai conducts examination for two out of eight papers of the third semester and for one paper out of eight in the fourth.

There are around 66 unaided institutions in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, New Panvel, Ratnagiri and Raigad under MU that provide management courses to students.

When contacted, MU registrar MA Khan said, "The course is run by many colleges and it is doing well in our university compared to other universities. The speciality of MU is that it has given autonomy to the management institutions so not only bookish knowledge is provided by the institutions but they also teach best management and leadership skills to students of this course. MU has given the exam pattern to these institutions — how much marks should be internal and how much external."
