Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray asked party cadre to work against BJP candidates. Thackeray, who will hold rallies against Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, pitched the elections as "a fight between Modi-Shah and the country."

Speaking at a public meeting on Tuesday, Thackeray, who said the battle was not against a particular party but against the Modi- Shah combine, dismissed reports that the MNS had been eager to strike a seat-sharing adjustment with the Congress and NCP.

"Let this campaign against Modi work in anyone's favour, you start preparing for the state assembly polls... I will hold rallies against the BJP and you work against them," said Raj, noting that in a public meeting last year, he had asked for a unity of all opposition parties to counter the BJP.

Raj charged that the 'choukidar' campaign was a gimmick to distract public attention from the failures of the BJP-led government like its inability to fulfil its promise for creating two crore jobs annually.

He accused the Modi government of fudging details about the strike by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on terror training facilities at Balakote in Pakistan and questioned how the cash-strapped regime, which had made the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) pay Rs 28,000 crore interim dividend, planned to raise money for a war with Pakistan.

Reacting to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis' statement that he (Thackeray) was being prompted to criticise the BJP by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Thackeray played video clips of Modi first criticising Pawar and later, praising him.

In 2014, Thackeray had supported Modi as the Prime Minister and later criticised him. "Since the person (Modi) changed, my stance changed," he explained.
