After spending a year in Sewri TB hospital, Mohammed Nadeem (16) is all set to go home. dna, on April 23, had reported how red-tapism in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) led to him losing a lung to TB when the hospital shut down its operation theatre (OT) last August as they had no doctors to monitor patients post surgery.

The OT was reopened on April 22 and Nadeem was the fourth patient to get operated on. Asia's largest TB hospital has now appointed a full-time cardio thoracic surgeon; after this the surgeries were scheduled. Eight to 10 patients will be operated on in the next two months.

"I am happy that I will finally be able to go home. I have been confined to this hospital for a year. I want to resume my studies," said Nadeem, who got operated on Friday and is now recuperating. He will be discharged in two weeks. According to the doctors, his right lung that was removed was in a terrible shape. They added that the multi-drug resistant TB patient will continue his medication for the remaining year.

"We had no option but to wait. He had to leave his studies. His mother didn't go home for a year and my two other children are handling things at home," said Nadeem's father, Anwar, who had to take a loan of around Rs1 lakh for his son's treatment.

According to doctors, surgery plays a vital role in TB management and has a high success rate.

Nadeem is not the only person who has suffered due to BMC's apathy towards Sewri TB hospital. Many are languishing there, waiting to get operated. "There is a 16-year-old Thane resident and a 19-year-old girl from a remote village in Maharashtra who have been waiting for the past year," said a doctor.

"We started with a 55-year-old patient. The load is humongous and we need more resident doctors."

Medical superintendent of Sewri TB hospital Dr Jagdish Keny confirmed that surgeries at the hospital started on April 22 after a year. A proposal has been submitted to the additional municipal commissioner requesting two full-time surgeons, five anaesthetists and three chest physicians. We plan to have an intensive respiratory care unit at the hospital," he added.

Before the surgeries were stopped, the hospital used to do four to six supra major surgeries a month and 1,500 to 2,000 emergency surgeries a year. It now has at least 35 TB patients admitted and awaiting their turn.
