Chain snatching cases in Mumbai railways has been a constant in the last three years, though the recovery rate has seen a fall this year as per information provided by railway police under RTI. While chain snatching is on rise, chain snatching by force has seen a drastic fall. Chain snatching by force is when a victim tries to resist the crime, whereas in other cases the person has no time to react and loses the chain.
However, what remains constant is the total number of cases registered. In 2013, the total number of cases reported was 335 while in 2018 it stood at 334. As per the information provided to RTI applicant Shakeel Ahmed Shaikh, the number of cases detected and the recovery of valuables has remained poor.
In case of detection, there was a fall instead of an improvement. If the total cases in 2013 stood at 335, detection that year was 48.5 per cent with 161 cases being cracked. In 2018, however, the performance fell. With 334 cases registered in 2018, the detection of cases fell to 27.84 per cent with only 93 cases being cracked.
In case of recovery, if in 2013 the total value of chains lost stood at Rs 1,29,21,867, the recovery was 36.82 per cent at Rs 47,58,955. While the value of chains lost in 2018 stood was Rs 1,61,38,822, the recovery fell further to 21.21 poer cent at Rs 34,23,443.
The year saw most cases registered, while 2015 in which 404 cases were registered. Detection though was better at 40.34 per cent with 163 cases being detected.
"The crime rate in railways has been on rise even after installation of CCTV cameras. The detection and recovery have been poor. Even if one was to take an average, the recovery rate is just 40 per cent while detection rate is 27 per cent," said Shaikh. GRP officials were not available for comment.
