Actor Naseeruddin Shah’s 20-year-old son Imaduddin Shah, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hinduja Hospital, with multiple injuries to his hands and legs, is in a stable condition, sources at the hospital said.

The student of St Xavier’s Institute was on his way to college at around 8.50 am on Thursday morning, when he fell off a local train between Mumbai Central and Mahalaxmi stations.

Addressing mediapersons in the evening, actor Shah said, “My son was first rushed to the Nair Hospital by cops and later brought to Hinduja Hospital at around 1 pm. He has multiple fractures on his hand, but is not in a critical condition anymore.”

Police inspector Vijaykumar Godbole, in-charge of Mumbai Central Railway police station, told DNA that the station master of Lower Parel station at around 8.30 am informed the police about the accident. Assistant sub-inspector MK Chavan with four porters, who rushed to the spot, found a grievously hurt Shah lying on the tracks. They rushed him to the government-run Nair Hospital. While checking his cellphone and textbooks, it was found that he was son of film star Naseeruddin Shah.

The college-goer is under the treatment of Dr Sanjay Agarwala, Head of Orthopaedic Department at the hospital and a team of doctors.

Actress Ratna Pathak Shah and filmmaker Govind Nihlani were among those present at Hinduja Hospital. Sources at the hospital said that it was not known how he fell off the train. He was in a semi-conscious state when he was brought in, sources added.

“We were very worried when we heard about the accident. But the doctors have assured us that Imad will be fine,” said Imaduddin’s mother and actress Ratna Pathak Shah.

“It’s a big relief that Imad is not hurt seriously. His reports have come out well and we are hoping that he will be discharged soon,” added Akash Khurana, actor and Imaduddin’s friend.

Imaduddin made his Hindi film debut, starring in his father’s first directorial venture, ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’. Imad has also been actively involved in theatre.

Death lurks on lifeline

There is once again blood on the tracks. It must have been a disastrous day for Naseeruddin Shah after one of  his sons fell off from a train between Lower Parel and Mahalaxmi at 8.30 am on Thursday. Railway is the lifeline of the city, but rail services sound death knell for thousands of people.

In the last four years, over 10,000 people lost their life on the tracks in the city. A whopping 8,522 people died due to carelessness, while crossing the tracks and 3,413 suffered serious injuries, incapacitating them for life.

At least 363 people lost their lives in 2005 after falling off from trains. This year the toll stands at 105 (till April). The first quarter of this year witnessed over 643 people getting injured as against 1,200 last year.
