NRI sends obscene mails to buddy’s fiancee

An NRI based in Hong Kong was recently summoned by the Mumbai Police for sending obscene emails to his friend’s fiancée. The complainant Heena Thakker (name changed), an NRI based in Hong Kong, got engaged last year and, soon after her engagement, started receiving obscene emails by a unidentified sender. She came to India last December and again received such emails. She then approached the cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC).

As the accused turned out to be her fiancée’s friend, she took back the complaint.

A senior CCIC officer said, “We started investigation and traced the IP address from where the emails were sent to Hong Kong. The investigation hit a roadblock then as we could not take action against the accused on foreign land.”

“We did not stop the investigation though and found out that some of the emails sent to Thakker were also from two locations in Mumbai — one in south Mumbai and the other was traced to a terminal in Sahar international airport,” he added.

Officials could not find much evidence at the south Mumbai location, but managed to get around 4,500 email IDs that were used from the terminal the day Thakker received the email. The details of the IDs, along with names, were sent to Thakker.

A person named Keval Satva was on the list. She suspected him, but taking action was a problem.

“We sent Satva an email asking him to come to Mumbai as there is a complaint against him for sending obscene emails and if he fails to we would seek Interpol’s help. He got scared and confessed. He had visited India twice when the emails were sent from here,” said another officer.
