The city police have failed to conduct a special drive against illegal sale of liquor and incidents of prostitution in hotels, restaurants and dhabas on state and national highways within the jurisdiction of the Pune police.

Three national highways — Pune-Hyderabad, Pune-Bangalore, Pune-Mumbai and five state highways pass through city. On October 20, the special inspector general police (law and order) Gulabrao Pol had issued a circular to all commissonerates in the state to conduct a special drive and submit a report to the director general (DG) office by the end of each month.

A senior police officer attached with the city police told DNA, "The order has been issued to all city police stations in October. However, none of the police stations have submitted their reports by end of October. We have asked the police stations to conduct a drive in their jurisdiction and submit a report in the next couple of days,'' he said.

The circular stated that the police station incharge must visit the hotels, restaurants and dhaba in his/her jurisdiction.

A police inspector attached with the city crime branch told DNA, "This drive should have been implemented in the city. It would go a long way in curbing illegal activities in the city. Also, criminals who organise their meetings in these dhaba and restaurants would refrain from doing so,'' he said.
