The much awaited Bhendi Bazaar Urdu Festival's second edition will begin from January 8. Besides giving language's heritage, contribution to Bollywood, lives of writers who spent time in the area, the three-day festival will have artists — whose mother tongue is neither Urdu nor are they Muslims — to give the language and festival the zing of confluence that it has lost.

Organised by the Urdu Markaz — an organisation that works for the promotion of the language and the culture — the festival will be held at Imambada ground and Babula Tank ground near Dongri. Like last time, this time too the festival will shell out a few more untold secrets. High on progressive literature that has sustained Urdu's evolution, the festival will have two heritage walks that will begin four to five days before the festival.

We will have a communist commune walk that will take people to places where these writers used to visit, book shops they went to and where they stayed, in greater details,"

This will include houses of Jan Nisar Akhtar — father of Javed Akhtar, Kaifi Azmi, Ali Sardar Jafri and Sahir Ludhyanvi. "One walk will be on Manto, the places he used to go that shaped characters of his books, including the red light area," said Azmi.

The three-day event is otherwise divided into cultural programs, sufi singers, qawwalis, and panel discussion, which among other thing will include 'Is Freedom of Speech Absolute?'.

Landmarks, and historical figures will also be described through posters. "This time emphasis is to tell people about unsung heroes. These are co-writers of prominent films like Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India and have written a number of works for the likes of Raj Kapoor, among others," said Azmi.

Delicacies that have been talk of the town will be provided from the prominent eateries of the area. "We are also trying to get someone who is from the Bhendi Bazaar Gharana — from which Lata Mangeshkar belongs — to come and sing. The work of this gharana is said to be mostly in praise of Hindu Gods. One of the three brothers, who came from Muradabad, settled here and started the gharana," said Azmi.
