Three people were killed on the spot and two others seriously injured after the sports utility vehicle, a Scorpio (MH12 DE 1373), in which they were travelling collided with a truck on the Pune-Mumbai expressway near Lonavla on Tuesday afternoon.

The police identified the victims as Suresh Sitaram Salunkhe (46), Suresh Bayaji More (50) and Sanjay Eknath Ranpise (52), all residents of Wadgaon Sheri.

The police said that the injured, Arun Shinde and Prashant Ovhal, have been admitted to the intensive care unit in a private hospital and their condition is said to be serious.

According to the police, the five were going to Mumbai in their Scorpio when, near Valval village, the driver lost control over the vehicle, which hit the road divider and crossed over to the other side of the road and collided with a truck.

Senior police inspector Vishnu Pawar of Lonavla police station said, “Ovhal was driving the car at a high speed. As a result, he lost control over the wheels and the car went over to the other side of the road. It collided with a truck (CG4 J 7480), which turned turtle.”

However, nobody in the truck was injured. Local residents and Lonavla police rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and rushed the injured to hospital.

Pawar added, “We towed the truck off the road. There was no traffic congestion on the expressway.”
