The Pune police have come under fire from various quarters in view of the violence that took place in various parts of the city during and after the elections for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations.

Within hours after deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar flayed the Pune police, police commissioner Meeran Chaddha Borwankar claimed that the Pune police were doing their best to maintain law and order in the city.
The Pune police have come under fire from various quarters in view of the violence that took place in various parts of the city during and after the elections for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations.
When Borwankar was asked to comment on deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar’s remark, “May be, it is time for change,’’ Borwankar said, “I don’t want to comment on this. We have taken more preventive action during poll time in the city. The Pune police are doing their best. I am doing my best. Whatever professional skills we have, we are using it. I have not faced any political pressure. I have had full freedom.’’
The city police chief also said, “We have seen that many people are unable to bear their defeat in the election. I have personally questioned Aba Sutar, a prime suspect in the violence at Sutarwadi, and he said he had been doing his best in the area and still the candidates sponsored by him had to face defeat.’’
She added, “It has been observed that damaging vehicles is a new modus operandi in the city. We have decided to slap stringent charges against people involved in such activities. We may also slap charges under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1981 (MPDA) and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA).’’
Earlier in the afternoon, additional commissioner of police (north region) Sureshkumar Mekhala said, “So far, we have arrested 221 people on different charges. We are in the process of checking their past record and after that, decision of invoking stringent charges under MPDA and MCOCA will be taken.’’
He added, “Most of the incidents have taken place in areas under jurisdiction of Pimpri and Sangvi police stations and we have decided to increase the number of beat marshals patrolling in the areas. Special teams have been formed at deputy commissioner of police level to track and nab wanted people who are on the run. We have observed that most of the externed people reactivated during poll time. Nakabandi and street patrolling has been stepped up.’’
