Here comes good news for Puneites, who are reeling under chronic water cuts in the city. The Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) has decided to get water from Lavasa dams to give some relief to the city that is facing water crisis.

Avinash Surve, superintendent engineer, Pune irrigation circle, said, “We have asked Lavasa Corporation to release 0.28 TMC water from its Gadale and Dasave dams to supply water to Pune. This water is adequate to suffice for the city for six-seven days.”

This year, Pune has been facing water shortage from the beginning of March. In February, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had announced that it would start implementing water cuts from March 1, as there was only 4 TMC water in the Khadakwasla dam to fulfil the city’s needs till mid-June.

The PMC then brought down its daily water intake to 1,150 MLD. However, recently the irrigation department recommended more water cuts in Pune suggesting that the civic body bring its daily water intake to 900 MLD, as only 3 MLD water was left in the dam.

The PMC has stated that it cannot bring the city’s water intake below 1,125 MLD per day and is contemplating imposing a no-water day every week. The Lavasa Corporation project is located in the catchment areas of Varasgaon dam. Lavasa constructed small dams to hold 1TMC water for residential complexes and hotels.

Now, when Pune is facing severe water scarcity, the MKVDC is getting water from Lavasa Corporation. Lavasa was granted permission to build the dams on the condition that it would release water to Varasgaon dam, if the need arises.

Surve said, “There is an agreement between Lavasa Corporation and MKVDC that whenever it is needed, Lavasa Corporation will have to release water from its dams into the Varasgaon dam. According to the agreement, we have asked Lavasa Corporation to release 0.28 TMC water from its Gadale and Dasave dams.”

Surve added, “After the instructions, Lavasa Corporation has emptied its Gadale dam and now water is being released from Dasave dam. Due to this water release from Lavasa, Pune will get 0.28 TMC water, which will give relief to Puneites for at least six-seven days.”

A spokesperson of Lavasa Corporation confirmed that water was being released from the Lavasa dams. “The Lavasa Corporation has started releasing water from its dams as asked by the irrigation department,” the spokesperson said.
