How were the planets named? Know their Roman connection here

Mercury is named after the Roman messenger god because it moves faster than all the other planets. 

Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Interestingly, Venus is the only planet named after a goddess. 

Earth is not named after any god. The name of our planet has English or German origins meaning 'the ground. Earth is the only planet not named after a god because in ancient times, Earth was not seen as a planet in antiquity. 

Mars is named after the Roman god of war. Mars was associated with the war due to its red colour. 

Jupiter is the king of the Roman gods. It has been named after the king probably because it is the largest planet.

Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture and time because it moves slower than all the other planets.

Uranus is the only planet to be named after a Greek god. As per mythology, Uranus is believed to be the personification of the sky and was in the original pantheon. 

Neptune is the Roman god of the sea. You will be surprised to know that Neptune is a planet found through mathematics even before it was visible.
