Australia's Fabrice Lapierre may give Commonwealth Games a miss

Australia's world indoor long jump champion Fabrice Lapierre is doubtful for the Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi.

Lapierre said he is in two minds about competing in India when the Games begin on October 3, which also happens to be his lay-off season.

If he eventually decides to skip the event, the 26-year-old will join fellow Australians and tennis players Samantha Stosur and Lleyton Hewitt in the list of athletes not taking part in the Games.

"It is in October which is really a bad time of the year for me and I am tempted to pull out because I don't know how well I will be jumping in October," Lapierre was quoted as saying in the Australian media Sunday.

The world number three is not confident of his performance at the Games. He is also worried about the security situation in India.

"It is a bit of everything. I hear a lot about the security there and I don't want to jump in October."

"I will also not be in peak condition while the athletes from South Africa are trying to peak at the Commonwealth Games."

But the long jumper knows representing Australia at the Games involves honour and it will be difficult for him to take the final decision.

"It is a bit of honour and I can't really pull out because I am one of the favourites. Hopefully I can keep my form and jump alright," Lapierre said.

Olympic champions Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser and Chris Hoy are among the star players who are not going to New Delhi.
