Dav Whatmore did what he is best at doing — changing jobs. He will soon leave Kolkata for Lahore without completing his contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders, just like he moved to the City of Joy from Bangalore before completing his term at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was not too happy that Whatmore cut short his three-year contract with them. In 2007, he was handed a three-year deal and was given a mandate. Midway through the assignment in 2009, he moved to take over the reins of KKR. Now he is hopping off to Pakistan, midway through his agreement with the Knight Riders.

With a World Cup win in his CV — he guided Sri Lanka to glory in 1996 — Whatmore was once the most sought after coach in the world. Even India contemplated recruiting him after the 2007 World Cup debacle but the Australian had to pay for his over eagerness to join the Men in Blue.

When India toured Bangladesh, he issued statements claiming that he was looking forward to working in India. He was the coach of Bangladesh team then and it did not go down well with the Bangladesh Board. It did not go down well with the BCCI either.

After his name was turned down by a committee to select the coach for the Indian team, Whatmore was left without a job in 2007. He was already out of Bangladesh. At that juncture, Ravi Shastri, who was just made the chairman of the NCA, offered him the job at the academy.

He was being given a salary of $175,000 per year, as much as Greg Chappell was being paid. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, promising to transform the Bangalore-based NCA into an effective centre of excellence. But soon he started looking for prospects among the IPL franchises and landed the KKR job  in 2009. He was given an annual pay package of $250,000.

It is said that he was clinging to the KKR job to have a bargaining power with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The KKR management, which has been following his activity for three months, finally intervened and said he cannot be both here and there. Close to signing the deal with the PCB, he put in his papers on Saturday but it has to be seen how long he will stay in Pakistan.
