The pre-wedding celebrations of billionaire Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani's son Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant have caused a surge in occupancy and pricing of hotels in Mumbai with the two main hotels in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to be fully booked. Travel and hotel websites reveal that one hotel is offering rooms for Rs 91,350 per night on July 14, a steep increase from the usual Rs 13,000 per night.

The wedding is set for July 12 at the Jio World Convention Centre in BKC, Mumbai. While the exact accommodations for guests haven't been officially confirmed, hotel rates in and around BKC have skyrocketed.

The pre-wedding festivities started with international pop sensation Justin Bieber performing for an audience of celebrities and sports figures on July 5. The celebrations are set to continue with numerous high-profile events from July 12 to July 14.

According to travel booking websites, room rates at the Trident BKC have varied drastically, from Rs 10,250 per night plus taxes on July 9 to Rs 16,750 plus taxes on July 15, and Rs 13,750 plus taxes on July 16. However, no rooms were available from July 10 to July 14.

Similarly, Sofitel BKC's rates have surged from Rs 13,000 plus taxes on July 9 to Rs 91,350 on July 14, with no availability on July 10 and July 11. Other five-star hotels like Grand Hyatt, Taj Santacruz, Taj Bandra, and St Regis still have rooms available for the mentioned dates.

Hospitality experts, preferring to remain anonymous, noted that hotels often sell out during high-profile weddings and events. This trend extends to the wedding season from October to December in Delhi and events like the Aero Show in Bengaluru. These events not only affect hotel occupancy but also increase flight rates and last-mile transport costs, with hotels often charging a 30% to 50% premium.

An expert compared this to the grand twin wedding of Sahara chief Subrata Roy's sons in Lucknow in 2004, where nearly all hotel suites and rooms were reserved for guests.

Traffic restrictions

The Mumbai Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory for BKC from July 12 to 15 because of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding. Several roads leading to the Jio World Convention Centre will have restricted access between 1 pm and midnight. The advisory aims to mitigate inconvenience for the public during the event.

A senior employee in BKC mentioned that significant traffic disruptions usually prompt work-from-home advisories for employees. While no such advisory has been issued yet, the main event on July 12 might lead individual offices to recommend work-from-home by July 8 or 9. BKC, home to Grade A office spaces like One BKC and The Capital, houses numerous national and multinational companies, including Bank of Baroda, Indian Oil, and the Reserve Bank of India, among others. It is one of the most expensive commercial districts in Mumbai.
