The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics was a vibrant celebration of global cultures. However, a segment that many felt mocked Jesus Christ’s Last Supper drew controversy. At the centre of this tableau was Barbara Butch, a well-known LGBTQ activist and French DJ.

The tableau was a modern take on Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting, 'The Last Supper'. It featured Butch at a long table with over 20 performers, including drag artists and dancers. Butch wore a silver headdress that resembled a halo.

This segment upset religious conservatives and Christian leaders worldwide. They felt it was disrespectful. In response, Olympic organisers apologised, stating that they did not intend any offence. On the other hand, some people viewed it as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and inclusivity.

The Last Supper holds deep significance in Christianity. It is described as the final meal Jesus shared with his twelve apostles before his crucifixion.

Who is Barbara Butch?

Barbara Butch is a notable figure in the LGBTQ+ community. She is both a DJ and an activist who promotes diversity, inclusivity, and body positivity. She calls herself a “love activist”.

After her performance at the Paris Olympics, Butch shared a photo on social media, writing, “I’m a love activist, DJ, and producer based in Paris. My aim is to unite people, gather humans, and share love through music for all of us to dance and make our hearts beat in unison! Music sounds better with all of us!”

Butch started her career playing at bars and parties in Montpellier, France, under the pseudonym "Scratcheuse de gazon". She later moved to Paris and performed at well-known venues like Rosa Bonheur and the Machine du Moulin Rouge.
