NEW YORK: Actor Rip Torn was arrested on Monday after he was involved in a two-car accident in North Salem, New York, and refused to take a breathalyzer test for alcohol, police said.

Torn, 75, was due in court in North Salem, a suburb of New York City, for an arraignment later on Monday, a police spokesman said.

Torn has been nominated for an Oscar and a Tony for a body of work going back to the 1950s and is known to more recently for playing Chief Zed in the Men in Black movies.

In 2004, a jury acquitted Torn of misdemeanor drunken driving charges after an arrest that became infamous for a police videotape of the handcuffed actor cursing at the officers and refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

Attorney Adam Levy, who represented Torn in the 2004 case, declined immediate comment other than to say one of his associates would represent Torn at his arraignment on Monday.

A publicist for Torn said he could not comment because he had yet to talk to the actor.

Torn made his movie debut with a small part in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll in 1956 and he studied acting under the legendary Lee Strasburg at the Actors Studio.

Torn was nominated in 1984 for a best supporting actor Oscar for Cross Creek, and he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1960 as best featured actor in a play for Sweet Bird of Youth.
