    Chief minister Jagadish Shettar has announced that mega wholesale markets will come up in all major district headquarters including Bangalore at a cost of ` 50 crores to provide improved marketing of horticultural produce that could in turn bring better price for agriculture produce of the farmers.

    Besides, the storage centres will also augment the mega wholesale markets, he said while presenting the agriculture budget along with the general budget for 2013-14, in the Assembly here on Friday. Upgradation of HOPCOMS sale outlets would also be taken up, Shettar said.

    "Agriculture and farmers are the highest priority sectors of our government," declared Shettar, while presenting the agricultural budget with an outlay of `22,310 crore for the year 2013-14. The budget also covered agriculture-allied sectors like animal husbandry, fisheries and rural development.

    Waste management
    Shettar said management of waste in food grains, fruits and vegetable markets was posing a major challenge.
    "Memoranda of understanding will be entered into with expert institutions to collect the waste in scientific manner and process and manage it properly, and a waste management system will be developed in Dasanapura and other markets of Bangalore," he said.

    Vegetable gardens
    To over come malnutrition and to compensate deficiency of Vitamin A & B among school children, the government had decided to develop vegetable gardens in schools. It is proposed to grow fruits and vegetables in kitchen gardens, school gardens, community parks and such other places to supply to children.

    "About 50 lakh children will be benefited at a cost of ` 2.5 crore during the year 2013-14," Shettar said.

    Weather-based crop insurance
    In an attempt to adopt scientific methods for providing weather forecast, ` 35 crore has been provided in 2013-14 to install remote rain gauge stations in 3,700 gram panchayats and to establish remote meterological centres in around 550 hoblis. In order to extend this scheme to the whole of the state ` 100 crore will be allocated for an effective crop insurance scheme benefiting 57 lakh farmers.

    Solar energy for pumpsets
    In order to decrease electricity consumption by 18 lakh irrigation pumpsets, the Karnataka solar energy scheme will be implemented in four districts. On the basis of its evaluation after implementation, ` 50 crore will be provided to extend it to other districts.
