The Lok Ayukta sleuths on Friday busted a major scam in social welfare department wherein senior officials swindled crores of rupees from a scheme of the central government.

The central government-sponsored programme was for providing nutritional supplements to women and children in the state.

The accused officials, allegedly in collusion with a Tamil Nadu-based company, siphoned off the funds.

The Lok Ayukta sleuths, after a detailed probe, conducted simultaneous raids on the houses and offices of senior IAS and KAS officials and confiscated movable and immovable properties disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Additional director general of police HN Satyanarayana Rao said the scheme—Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)—had received Rs600 crore from the central and state governments.

The Lok Ayukta officials had received a complaint, alleging large-scale diversion of scheme funds by the officials for personal gain. After a detailed inquiry, a team led by DIG Arun Chakravarty conducted raids at 10 places across the state, including the house of director of women and child welfare department Shamla Iqbal at PWD quarters, Jeevanbhimanagar. Iqbal was recently relieved from her position and is awaiting a new posting.

The Lok Ayukta officials also raided the houses of other officials, including joint director Usha Patwari and assistant director Muniraju.

The officials also raided the office of department of women and child welfare at MS building and confiscated incriminating documents about tender and records on supply of food. They also seized computers and other files to verify the records maintained by the department. The offices of the department in Nelamangala, Tumkur, Mysore, Raichur and Bidar were also raided.

The office of Christy Fried Gram Industries at Malleswaram, which was entrusted to supply the food supplements, was also raided.

“We are ascertaining the credentials of the company that bagged the contract to supply food,” Rao said, adding that there were allegations that the company was supplying sub-standard food grains and in many districts, the supply never reached the beneficiaries.
