A retired Delhi Police officer allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by jumping in front of a moving train. The railway police received a call around 6 am from a passer-by who discovered the body at Tilak Bridge, where the incident took place.

"The deceased has been identified as Ram Swaroop Bhasin, who retired from the Delhi Police as an Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) almost seven months ago," said Milind Dumbre, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways).

"The deceased was identified after a suicide note was recovered from his pocket," the officer from the railway police said.

The family was called in who confirmed the identity of the deceased. According to information provided by the family, Bhasin was depressed over health-related issues.

"He had a stomach problem that was not going away. The family and Bhasin suspected cancer which probably sent the retired officer in depression," Dumbre added.

Police officials suspect Bhasin left his South Delhi's Vasant Kunj residence sometime late at night and never went back. He would often leave the house for hours on end and eventually return, the police said based on information given by the family. "That is probably why, when Bhasin left, the family did not register a complaint," a senior police official stated.

Since the family was certain about the depression, no foul play is suspected and no case has been registered. The body has been sent for post-mortem and will be returned to the family for the final rites.
