All speculation ended on Sunday when chief justice of India (CJI), KG Balakrishnan, shared the dais with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi at the GNLU convocation.

Earlier, families of victims of the Godhra riots had written an open letter to Balakrishnan and Zimbabwean judge Ahmed Musa Ebrahim, asking them not to share the dais with Modi at the first convocation ceremony of GNLU.

The letter says, "Any association of the chief justice of India with a person who is being examined under the directives of the Supreme Court, for his role in the killing of innocent people, will send out wrong signals and undermine the process of justice in Gujarat."

The first convocation of GNLU was held on Sunday, in which 151students were conferred with degrees. Manita Doshi was awarded four gold medals at the convocation.

Speaking on the occasion, justice AM Ebrahim of the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe said, "After law school begins the learning of the application of the law to real life dramas".

Welcoming the students, chief justice of India, KG Balakrishnan said, "I am happy to be here for this convocation. I congratulate the students who have received degrees." Justice Balakrishnan said as the legal profession itself was undergoing massive changes, the young law graduates have a wide range of opportunities to choose from. With increasing opportunities to study and work in foreign countries, qualified lawyers can also look forward to
careers in international institutions.

"In our present system, young law students are always competing against each other to do well in academics and eventually secure good jobs. However, this spirit of competition should also be channelled in creative and innovative ways which give them better preparations for their careers."

Gujarat high court chief justice, SJ Mukhopadhaya said, "The role of law in civil society cannot be underestimated, it is nothing but rule of morality, ethics and common sense codified together."
