Maharashtra state sugar commissionerate would soon be carrying out both cost and energy audits in the 123 sugar factories across the state. Industry insiders claim that such an exercise will be conducted in the state for the first time.

State’s sugar commissioner Vijay Singhal told DNA that he has mooted the idea to improve the performance of these factories.

“The cost of conversion for the process of manufacturing sugar has already been fixed. Once the cost audit is done for individual factories, they would know the extra expenditure and can take steps to cut the cost,” he said.  Energy audit would help factories plan and utilise their energy reserves better.

The audit would be conducted by a panel of experts from the sugar commissionerate, sugar factories, sugar co-operatives and professionals from the Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI), Pune.
“At present, the audit parameters are being drawn up by an
expert panel,” he said.

After meeting the managing directors of sugar factories in Pune and Kolhapur, Singhal claimed that the idea of audit was welcomed by the industry at large.

“The state government has cleared the proposal and, in all probability, the audit would start post Diwali,” Singhal said.
