The Kalyan railway police on Monday arrested a 20-year-old hawker on charges of pelting stones from running trains towards commuters standing on platforms of the railway stations and injuring them.
“A resident of Khadwali near Kalyan Boru Padmaner used to sell vada-paav between Kalyan and Khadwali stations,” said senior police inspector AR Jagtap of Kalyan railway police station.
It has been alleged that whenever Padmaner was harassed by the railway police for hawking illegally in railway premises, he used to pelt stones at commuters.
The increasing stone-pelting incidents on railway commuters between Khadwali and Kalyan stations on Central Railway gave the railway police sleepless nights.
They formed two teams of 15 personnel, including five woman constables, to control the crime.
Their efforts bore fruitful results when they nabbed Padmaner red-handed while pelting the stones at Shahad station.
