Mumbai police sets up rainwater harvesting project

In a city that faces water shortage throughout the year, Mumbai Police today inaugurated its rain harvesting project to make maximum utilisation of rainwater, in a first ever such initiative by the force to save water.

A ring well has been constructed as part of the scheme near the existing bore well at Mumbai Police Naigaon building.

Pipelines have been installed to harvest and store rainwater from rooftops to ring well. This ring well will also charge the existing bore well, enabling more water supply.

The project which was on the paper since a year was today inaugurated by Joint Police Commissioner (Law & Order) Rajnish Seth.

The project was initiated in association with Rotary Club, an NGO.

"The city is regularly facing water problems due to various reasons. Rain water harvesting is one of the solutions if one wants to solve their water shortage problems," Seth said.

"Now we don't have to depend upon civic body entirely for water. The rainwater would be stored and utilised for various purposes," he said.

Mumbai receives 3350 million litres of water per day (MLD) for over 1.25 crore population where as its actual demand is 4200 MLD.

A member of Rotary Club, Narendra Lillaney said that the harvested rainwater could be utilised for gardening and washing utensils.

Water purification equipment would be installed in the later stage to purify the rainwater that can also be used for drinking purpose, he said.
