On the International Women’s day, the LifeCell International, pioneers in stem cell banking, launched LifeCell Femme - Menstrual blood stem cell banking service in India. Actress  Lisa Ray unveiled the banking service as she had undergone stem cell technology and benefited from it to battle blood cancer.

The recent research demonstrates that the menstrual blood contains large number of self-renewing stem cells. These cells multiply rapidly and can differentiate into other types of cells, demonstrating great potential for cell therapy.

Mayur Abhaya, executive director, LifeCell International said, “In India, there is lot of myths and taboo associated with menstrual blood and our challenge will be to get people  accept and overcome such traditional setbacks. The goal of mesenchymal cell therapy is to treat diseases of non-hematopoietic tissues in an analogous fashion to treating leukemia with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.”

Dr Indira Hinduja, Mumbai-based infertility expert, who has been studying on endometrial stem cells for a year now, has recently submitted her research for publication in an international journal.

In the research, Dr Hinduja and her team, Dr Kusum Zaveri and Manisha Chaudhary found that the endometrial cells found in the lining of the uterus which are shredded every month during menstruation, are like embryonic stems cells. “We are waiting for the study to get published in the international journal as it will be the authentic way to confirm our research. Our next step will be to differentiate these cells into various cells like including bone, blood vessel, brain, lung, liver, pancreas and heart.”
