The future of cricket is Twenty20. Apart from the games I played for India, my stint with Surrey was very interesting.

It was there that I got a first-hand feel of Twenty20. It is three hours of swash-buckling, raw action. A bowler, on his good day, will be happy if he gives away 40 runs off the four overs he gets.

Stands were packed and the crowd was lapping it up. This doesn’t mean that bowlers are hit all over the park. Sometimes bowlers too have a field day, and my best has been 2-22. This version of the game is very convenient for spectators. They can finish their day’s work; grab a drink and sit back to watch an action-packed game featuring their favourite heroes.

At times domestic cricket doesn’t draw enough crowds. So, it might be a good idea to introduce this form of the game in our domestic circuit. A pool of the 10 best teams can be selected after the Ranji Trophy and a tournament can be organised. It is sure to become a big hit here. Played under lights, this will also provide invaluable experience for youngsters.

I would love to play domestic cricket, but I just don’t get the time. I still vividly remember a domestic match where nearly nine international players including, Sachin and Dravid played, the stands were packed.

Success is easy to achieve, it needs only three elements — perseverance, application and hard work. I hold this very close to my heart and it has always helped me in times of self-doubt and failure. For me, 2005 was very challenging.

After recovering from my injury I was back into the team early this year. Overall, it has been a good year for me. Indian cricket in on an upswing and the future looks bright. We are working really hard for the World Cup and we are sure to come up trumps. The team is well balanced and clicking well as a unit.

All said and done, I feel that the conventional version of Tests and ODIs represents the real game. Variants like Twenty20 can be used effectively to provide good  entertainment for Indian fans who have an insatiable thirst for cricket.
