Just a day before declaring the results of the higher secondary certificate (HSC) exam, the Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary education announced on Wednesday that it was withholding the results of 2,883 students from the Latur division following reports of mass copying.

These students had appeared for the exam conducted by the board in February. Students found guilty of copying may also be prevented from appearing for the re-examination in October, a board official said.

This is the first time that the results of such a large number of students are being withheld in Maharashtra, Latur division in-charge MR Kadam told DNA.

Kadam said officials of the board were manhandled by a group of people in Latur on Wednesday when they had gone to investigate the alleged mass copying.

Representatives of schools, parents, board officials, and moderators had gone to examine the answer sheets that were found to be identical. A group of people, attacked them, Kadam said. A complaint was lodged with the police.

Kadam said action would be initiated after a thorough inquiry.
