Central University of Karnataka a big draw but seats are few

More applicants are making a beeline to the Central University of Karnataka in Gulbarga to join new courses. But many return disappointed as there is a limit to the seats for each course.

This year, the university received 1,063 applications for the entrance test conducted a few weeks ago. Last year, only 600 applications were received.

Although the demand is high for several courses offered by the university, the intake of the university is limited to 450. Though there are about 15 courses available, only 30 students can be admitted to each course.

Because of this, many applicants are not getting seats. While the number of students who got enrolled last year was 148, this year 450 eligible students will be admitted.

Most students apply for MBA, MPhil (History, Geography, Psychology, Kannada, English), PhD (History, Geography, Kannada, English, Economics) and MCom and MA (English and Kannada).

There is also demand for new courses such as BBA (three-year course) MSW, MA Economics and MSc Psychology.“All courses are offered on choice-based credit system. They are inter and multi-disciplinary in content and based on semester system,” said an official of the university.

Other features which made the university so popular in just one year are school of study system, continuous internal assessment, academic freedom for students to choose and design their course of study by picking up components of allied, elective and supportive courses apart from their core course of study.

“Students are sent on academic tours to national institutions to gain exposure. Internships, trainings and industry visits are also part of course,” a university official said.It also offers job openings for MBA students through the student placement division.

“All UG and PG students are offered merit-cum-means scholarship to the extent of 20% of tuition fees collected in each course according to university rules.

All MPhil and PhD students are offered scholarship of Rs3,000 and Rs5,000 per month respectively in addition to the annual contingency of Rs8,000 (MPhil) and Rs12,000 (PhD.),” the official said.
