Even though the city’s first cycle track at Jayanagar is yet to be launched and the tracks have turned into parking lots for
cars, authorities are already planning the second cycle track, at Madiwala.

The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has prepared the detailed layout and urban design for the Madiwala cycle track, covering residential areas such as Bommanahalli, Roopena Agrahara, Bilekahalli and BTM Layout.

The project will be taken up at a cost of Rs7.5 crore and cover a distance of about 5.8 km. The cycle tracks will be only on the right side of the road but, being 2.7-metre wide, will allow two-way traffic.

The design provides for a cycle track on the Tank Shore Road alongside Madiwala Lake and a 310-metre-long bridge on the north side of Madiwala Lake, connecting Hosur Road.

The design, which was submitted to the BBMP, has received the administrative approval but is yet to get the technical approval. The BBMP officials are expecting that the approval will come within a week, after which tenders will be called for.

Total development
The DULT design has given consideration to the tracks as well as the footpaths while preparing the design. According to the report, this is especially important, considering that if the footpath is not fit for use, pedestrians will occupy the cycle tracks, which will not only affect the movement of cycles but will also put pedestrians as well as cyclists at risk.

“The project envisages a comprehensive development of road as well as footpath so that it can be of maximum benefit to both pedestrians and cyclists,” said a BBMP official.

More encroachment?
Based on the encroachment on the cycle tracks at Jayanagar, it is likely that the cycle tracks at Madiwala too will be encroached upon, given that they are not dedicated cycle tracks (which have physical barriers).

The DULT’s plan looks at a segregated cycle track (separated with paint). Only about 2.5 km of the entire stretch is dedicated. This stretch will be demarcated using a kerb, he said.

Other projects
The DULT has plans of encouraging non-motorised transport by providing cycle tracks at Indiranagar, RMV II stage, RT Nagar and Kormangala.

The feasibility studies for these projects are in various stages of completion, said V Manjula, commissioner, DULT.

These tracks will eventually make a loop around the city so that residents can move around the city on their cycle.
