Taking care of a dog is not always easy. It is a long-term commitment. If that sort of commitment is not something you are looking for and you still want to help out with a short-term commitment, you could provide foster care to a pup for a few months.
Many non-profit organisations involved in rescuing and finding homes for dogs rely on volunteers who take care of the pup till a permanent home is found. Foster cares, as these are called, allows a family to take care of a pup for a couple of months, till the pup finds a permanent home.
According to Debadrita Jadhav of Precious Paws Foundation, a foster care provides a traumatised pup with personal attention. “Since most pups are rescued from the streets, they need a lot of care and attention. A foster care will be able to provide this to pups,” she said.
“Although a shelter has its advantages—for instance vets who will provide medical help to pups—in a shelter, the chances of pups contracting diseases are high,” she adds.
Most of the time, families who provide foster homes already have dogs of their own, she adds. Families in a foster care look after their pup in every aspect- feeding, training and medical care, but temporary. Precious Paws has around seven-eight volunteers who provide foster care to pups.
Dos and don’ts
At Precious Paws, families interested in providing foster care are provided with a list of guidelines on what to do in various situations. “The guidelines include information including diet, symptoms of various diseases, etc,” said Jadhav.
Families usually have to take care of the pup till they find a permanent home. “While this usually takes only a few months, it is important that pups are not moved from one home to another too often. It is not good for the dog’s health,” she adds.
So does Let’s Live together, another NGO that depends on foster care for their dogs. The volunteers at Let’s Live Together provides foster care for pups between the age of a few weeks to about two months. Most pups find a permanent home by the time they are about two-three months old.
Achala Pani of Let’s Live Together adds that in a foster care environment, a pup gets used to the home environment, which is very different from living on the streets, often a preparation for their permanent homes.
Foster care, however, is not easy. “There are costs involved. Although the pup may not be your own, you still have to look after its every need,” adds Pani. Let’s Live together is currently looking for volunteers who will be able to provide foster care for pups.
