Bollywood's most-loved chef Kelvin Cheung booked for cheating restaurant co-owner of INR 1.47 crore: Report

Mumbai Police has reportedly booked Canada-born Chef Kelvin Cheung in cheating case. The chef, who is Bollywood's most-loved, has been accused of cheating on his restaurant Bastian's co-owner of USD 200,000 (INR 1.47 crore).

According to a report on Hindustan Times, Kelvin and his father Chi Ping Cheung have been booked under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code at the Khar Police Station. A resident of Pali Hill, Bandra and reported co-owner of Bastian, Ranjit Bindra, lodged the complaint against Cheung.

According to the complaint, Cheung offered Bindra to invest in his plans, while the latter was working at the restaurant. The complainant stated that Chi Ping also convinced him of investing in the plan.

For the uninformed, Bastian is a popular restaurant franchise with its branches in Chicago and Los Angeles too.

"In 2015, the complainant had invested USD 200,000 in multiple transactions," senior inspector of Khar police station Gajanan Kabdule told the daily.

"Recently, Bindra learnt that Cheung has returned to India. He hoped to get his money back, and hence approached police and registered a complaint," said Kabdule.

Cheung, on the other hand, said, "I have not received any details about the case from Bastian or the police, so I can’t comment on the same. I can state that I wasn’t part of any deal with Bastian regarding their investment deal. I haven’t signed any contracts with them and I haven’t received any payments from them as alleged by them."

Various Bollywood celebrities like Alia Bhatt have often shared their appreciation for Cheung in the past. Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani, were also spotted visiting Bastian every weekend before the COVID-19 lockdown.
