Gadar 2 has justified its title and created mayhem at the box office. The Sunny Deol-starrer has crossed Rs 400 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 500 crore worldwide. In the process, it has broken some of the earning records set earlier this year by Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, a feat considered unthinkable by many. In an exclusive chat with DNA, the film’s stars Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, and Manish Wadhwa spoke about their film’s record-breaking feat and the significance of Gadar 2’s success.

When informed that Gadar 2 has done better on its second weekend than Pathaan and it is on course to overtake the SRK-starrer’s domestic haul, the film's villain Manish Wadhwa said, “We don’t talk about numbers but what is happening, it shows people’s love. God willing the film will continue to do well. I had faith but I did not anticipate this. I always knew that the film will do something but this is beyond expectations.”

Utkarsh Sharma, who reprises his role as Sunny Deol’s son Charanjeet in Gadar 2, said he saw the same enthusiasm for this film that he had seen for Gadar two decades ago. “During the first Gadar, I was a kid then but I remember watching the film in single screen halls and I saw that experience of people dancing. Again now, in halls like Gaiety and Maratha Mandir, I saw the same euphoria. It is the result of that euphoria that we are seeing now across India,” he told us.

The film’s new leading lady Simrat Kaur added that she initially had some apprehensions about the film’s performance but those doubts were washed away once she saw how well the original Gadar did on its re-release in theatres two months ago. She elaborated, “I had a doubt about the generation gap. There was a gap of 20 years between the films. I was wondering if my generation will connect with it. When Gadar re-released on June 9, I watched it in the theatre and it was housefull. People, most of whom were my age, knew all the lines. They were whistling, cheering all through. Then I realised that if the re-release is getting so much love, then Gadar 2 will surely do well.”

Utkarsh added that the success of Gadar 2 has brought people back to theatres in single screens and smaller towns. “This is not a film of just Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. It is a film that has worked in smaller towns like Indore, Agra, and even towns of Punjab. It has done so well in single screens that it has brought people back to the theatres there. It has revived that.”

Gadar 2, directed by Anil Sharma, was released on August 11 and is running successfully in theatres. The film has earned over 415 crore net in India and over Rs 525 crore worldwide so far. It is on course to challenge Pathaan’s all-time record domestic net collection of Rs 543 crore.
