Filmfare Awards are one of the most respected honours in the Hindi film industry. From starting with just five awards in its first ceremony in 1954, the 68th edition of the ceremony saw awards being given in 29 different categories. The Filmfare Award for Best Actor has been a constant since the first edition when it was awarded to Meena Kumari for Baiju Bawra.

Nutan and her niece Kajol have won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress five times each, the highest ever by a leading lady. However, the record for receiving the most nominations in this category belongs to Madhuri Dixit, who has been nominated a total of fourteen times and has ended up winning four times out of those. She also holds the record for most consecutive nominations as she was nominated ten times consecutively from 1989 to 1996.

Madhuri Dixit earned her first nomination at the 1989 Filmafre Awards for Tezaab but Rekha won the award that year for Khoon Bhari Maang. Next year in 1990, Madhuri received her second nomination for Prem Pratigyaa but lost out to Sridevi, who won it for her double role in ChaalBaaz.

In 1991, Madhuri received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Dil. In 1992, Madhuri was nominated again for Dil but Sridev once aain took home the Black Lady statuette for Lamhe. Madhuri won her second Filmfare Best Actress award in 1993 for Beta. In 1994, she lost out the rophy to Juhi Chawla, who bagged it for Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke.

The year 1995 was extra special for Madhuri as she received two nominations for Best Actress at Filmfare for Hum Aapke Hain Koun! and Anjaam, and ended up winning for the first one. In 1996 also, Mandhuri receieved two nominations for Raja and Yaarana, but Kajol won the award that year for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

In 1998, Madhuri won her fourth and final Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Dil To Pagal Hai. Three years later in 2001, she received her twelfth nomination for Pukar, but lost out to Karisma Kapoor for Fiza. Madhuri was once again nominated in 2008 for her comeback film Aaja Nachle, but Kareena Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Jab We Met that year. In 2015, Madhuri's fourteenth nomination came for Dedh Ishqiye, when Kangana Ranaut won the award for Queen.
