The Indian cinema has seen various talents from the south making big in Bollywood (read- Vyjayanthimala, Sridevi, Rekha). However, there have been instances when an artiste from Bollywood, has found recognition in regional cinema. One of them is Komal Mahuvakar aka Rupini

Rupini wanted to become a doctor

Born in a well-educated family, Rupini wasn't inclined to act and she wanted to become a doctor, but destiny had its own plan. Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee spotted little Komal at 6 and offered her a role in Milli (1975). Then she continued working as a child artiste in Kotwal Saab and Khoobsurat.

Rupini failed as an actress in Bollywood

As an adult, Komal did a few character roles and then landed her first leading role in  Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980), (1980), Kunal Goswami's Ghungroo (1983), Meri Adalat (1984) and Awara Baap (1985). None of these films was successful, and Komal was disappointed in Bollywood.

Komal became star Rupini in the south

After facing failure in Bollywood, Komal moved south and changed her name to Rupini. Unlike Hindi cinema, Rupini found success in the south. She worked with the biggest stalwarts of the south, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, and Vijaykanth.

Some of her films include Cooliekkaran (1987), Manithan (1987), En Thangachi Padichava (1988), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990) and Madurai Veeran Enga Saami (1990).

Rupini left her established career for...

Rupini married Mohan Kumar in 1995, and after marriage, she quit films and concentrated on her family based at Chembur. Rupini also started a heart hospital at Chembur, Universal Heart Hospital.

Rupini and her acting comeback

In 2005 Rupini made her acting comeback with the popular Hindi series Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki. She even made her comeback in Tamil television after 26 years with the series Chithi 2 (2020).
