But if new reports are to be believed, the superstar may have ended up raking in Rs 200 crore profit from that film.
Shah Rukh Khan’s bumper 2023
Pathaan was how Shah Rukh Khan began 2023. The spy thriller was his first release in almost five years and it grossed over Rs 1000 crore worldwide, breaking several box office records. Eight months later, Shah Rukh upped the ante with an even bigger – Jawan, which had a worldwide gross of Rs 1150 crore. His third and final release of the year was Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. The film opened at a relatively modest Rs 30 crore and grossed just under Rs 500 crore worldwide, making it SRK's lowest-grossing film since 2018. Many assumed that it was underwhelming given the box office tsunamis of Jawan and Pathaan. However, trade analysts clarified that since Dunki had a budget of under Rs 100 crore, it was a big success.
How Shah Rukh earned big from Dunki
A new report in Deccan Chronicle claims that Shah Rukh ended up making a profit as high as Rs 200 crore from Dunki. The actor did not charge fee for the film but took a share in profits and distribution rights. “He would have pocketed Rs 200 crore plus profits as the film earned Rs 600 crore plus collections across the world,” the publication quoted a source as saying. Even if taking into account conservative box office numbers for the film (Rs 470 crore and not Rs 600+ crore), Shah Rukh’s earnings from the film should be over Rs 100 crore. The report claims that even the director Hirani pocketed in excess of Rs 100 crore for his work on the film.
Dunki, which released last December, is based on illegal immigration in the UK and the emigration dreams of Punjab youth. The film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Vikram Kochhar, Anil Grover, and Vicky Kaushal.
