OMG 2 box office collection day 5: Akshay Kumar film registers best day yet, earns Rs 18.50 crore on Independence Day

Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi-starrer OMG 2 has pulled off a great recovery on Independence Day, giving the film a fair chance at a long and healthy run at the box office. The social drama, which opened to lukewarm numbers, has improved day by day via positive word of mouth. On Tuesday, it saw its best day ever as collection eclipsed its Sunday figures as well, taking the film’s overall collections to within touching distance of Rs 100 crore.

OMG 2 earned Rs 18.50 crore on Tuesday, an excellent 50% jump as compared to its Monday haul, and even more than its Sunday earnings of Rs 17.55 crore. This has taken the film’s domestic net collection to Rs 74 crore and its worldwide gross to just under Rs 100 crore. The film should cross the 100-crore mark sometime on Wednesday.

The jump on Tuesday has also ensured that the film’s life increases. With no major releases this week, OMG 2 has a free run (along with Gadar 2) at the ticket windows till Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dream Girl 2 arrives next week. Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher’s Ghoomer does release this weekend but is unlikely to trouble the two running films much due to its niche target audience.

OMG 2 had released alongside Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and the latter was always expected to do much better in terms of earnings. So even as OMG 2 had better reviews, Gadar 2 opened to astonishing numbers. However, the favourable reviews did the film some favour, helping it recover, first over the weekend and then on Independence Day. The fact that the film is A-rated meant its viability was also limited. Hence, this business is very good for the film.
