As the first cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) came to a close with New Zealand beating India in the final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, the next cycle 2021-23 will kick off in August with the five-match Test series between England and India.

The format of the championship remains the same with each of the nine teams playing six series each, three at home and three away.

Similar to the first cycle, the maximum number of matches are divided between the Big three as England will play the most number of Tests (21), followed by India (19) and Australia (18), followed by South Africa, who will be playing 15 Test matches. Pakistan will be playing 14 matches and the inaugural winners of the WTC New Zealand will be playing 13 Tests, the same number as West Indies and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh is the only side, who will be playing two matches in every series, a total of 12 games.

India after the overseas assignment against England will face the Kiwis at home in a two-match series later this year after the ICC T20 World Cup and will lock horns against Australia for a four-match series at home next year, while they will be going to South Africa in December-January for a three-match series.

New Points system proposed by the ICC

However, there is a major change in the next cycle as to uniform the points system and keep the discrepancy out of the system. According to ESPN Cricinfo, the ICC has proposed a method where every team will get 12 points for a win, 6 points for a tie (50%), 4 points for a draw (30%) and no points for a loss, irrespective of the number of matches in a series.

Whether it is a five-match series or two-match series, the 120-point system allocated for each series is set to be abolished. The teams will also lose one point each for the slow over-rate. A point will be deducted for one over lost as adjudged by the umpires and officials of the game.
