Shafali Verma made history by becoming the second Indian woman to achieve a double hundred in Test cricket. The 20-year-old accomplished this remarkable feat on Day 1 of the Only Test against South Africa at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The right-handed batter reached the milestone off 194 balls during the third session of the day's play at the Chepauk. The only other Indian woman to achieve this milestone was the legendary Mithali Raj, who scored a double century against England in 2002 in Taunton.

Shafali's incredible performance also earned her the title of the 7th highest individual scorer in Women's Tests, and the second highest by an Indian woman after Mithali's 214 against England. She scored an impressive 205 runs off 197 balls, including 23 fours and 8 sixes, before being run out at the striker's end.

Prior to this, she became the youngest Indian to reach 500 Test runs and the second youngest to score a Test hundred after Mithali. Additionally, she set a new record for the fastest double hundred in Women's Tests, surpassing Annabel Sutherland's 248 earlier this year against South Africa.

Earlier, India chose to bat first, and Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana made history by setting the record for the highest opening partnership in Women's Tests. The pair put together an impressive 292-run partnership in just 52 overs. Shafali reached her fifty in 60 balls and went on to score her first Test century in 158 deliveries. After lunch, she accelerated her scoring to reach a double century.

Even after Mandhana was dismissed, Shafali continued to play aggressively. She was on track to surpass Mithali Raj's score of 214 when she was run out after hesitating to take a run. Replays confirmed that she was well short of the crease, and Sinalo Jafta removed the bails to dismiss her. Despite the unfortunate end to her innings, Shafali received a warm applause from the spectators at Chepauk.
