Watch Video: Massive avalanche hits Gandhi Sarovar in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath

On Sunday, an avalanche struck Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand. A video posted by the news agency PTI featured the avalanche rushing down the slopes.

Rudraprayag senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr. Vishakha Ashok Bhadane informed ANI that an avalanche hit Gandhi Sarovar in Kedarnath around 5 am today, with no casualties or damage reported.

An avalanche occurs as snow flows down a hill or mountainside. Warning signs include cracking sounds, fractures in the snow, and heavy snowfall.

Earlier this month, Kedarnath Dham saw an influx of devotees of around 700,000 by June 6th.

According to a PTI report, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla proposed the formation a committee to form a strategy for managing the Chardham Yatra in the future. He underlined the need of yatra management at the ground level.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami stated, ‘Due to the development of roads, air traffic, and other infrastructure facilities, twice as many pilgrims have visited the state for the Chardham Yatra compared to last year. Last year saw a total of 19 lakh pilgrims visiting Kedarnath, whereas this year, 10 lakh pilgrims have already arrived.
