A 5-year-old girl died while her aunt and her son sustained grievous injuries after a car hit them in East Delhi's New Ashok Nagar area on Friday night. Police said they have arrested the accused, a 27-year-old property dealer on Saturday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Sandhya (5), who was accompanying her aunt Lekha Bharti (24) for buying medicines from a nearby medical store for Naitik (5). They were walking back home in old Kondli area when the accident happened.

"I was standing outside my shop when the woman and two kids were walking on the narrow lane. Suddenly, a white colour Santro car hit the trio. While Sandhya came under the vehicle, the other two fell a few meters away due to the impact and sustained critical injuries. It seemed like a mistake as the driver instead of applying breaks pressed the accelerator," said Yogiraj Singh, a local.

Police said they received a police control room call at around 8.30 pm on Friday about an accident after which the three were rushed to the Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital, with the help of the accused driver, who was identified as Naveen Sharma.

"Sandhya was declared brought dead on arrival at the hospital while her aunt and cousin have been referred to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital. The boy is critical and her mother is said to be out of danger now. A case of causing death due to negligence under section 304A and for rash driving has been registered against Sharma, and he has been arrested," said Pankaj Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

Police sent the body of the victim for post-mortem, which was later handed over to the family members while the vehicle has been seized.

Police said Sandhya used to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother had expired two months ago. She was brought to Delhi from Sultanpur two weeks ago. The minor girl's father works as a contractual labourer.

Sharma works as a property dealer and is a resident of the same area. According to Sharma's family, he was returning home after buying the second-hand car at the time of the accident.

"He was taking driving lessons for the last one week. He also told us that since the lane is narrow with drains on both its ends, he mistakenly accelerated the car and could not control it when the victims came in front of the vehicle. He is the only bread earner of the family," said Giri Raj, Sharma's cousin.
