Many actresses who came to Bollywood to become top heroines, did become a stars, however, got fame for their side roles. One such actress, who worked with Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and other superstars, failed to become a top heroine, however, is a National Award-winner.

Divya Dutta was raised by a single mother following her father’s death when she was just 7 years old. Dutta revealed how she used to hide behind her mother’s dupatta so in fear during the Punjab insurgency praying that nobody would shoot them. 

She started her journey in the entertainment industry when she was just 17 years old with the film Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna. This was followed by the supporting role of Bindiya in the 1995 film Surakshaa, alongside Suniel Shetty. The actress bagged her first lead role alongside Salman Khan in Veergati and though, the film flopped at the box office, it is considered as a cult classic by Salman’s fans. 

She then essayed supporting roles in her next three releases  Agni Sakshi alongside Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala, Chhote Sarkar alongside Govinda and Shilpa Shetty, and Ram Aur Shyam.

Though she was restricted to doing supporting roles in Bollywood, she shined in Punjabi cinema and became a star. She started her journey with the movie  Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh opposite Gurdaas Maan and the film became a surprise hit at the box office. 

She finally got recognition in Bollywood with the role of Shabbo in Yash Chopra's epic love saga Veer-Zaara, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji. The film became a cult classic. After this, there was no looking back for the actress. Though she gave many hits like Special 26, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and more, the actress couldn’t become a top heroine in Bollywood. 

However, like any other outsider, Divya Dutta also had her own struggles. The actress while talking about her initial struggles, Dutta revealed that she was replaced by other actors in at least 20 films at one point. However, that didn’t break her spirit. She further revealed that she started becoming the face of her films after she won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her film Irada. 

The actress is currently winning hearts with her performance in the movie Sharmajee Ki Beti. The film marks Tahira Kashyap’s directorial debut and has received a positive response from the audience. The film also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Saiyami Kher, and others in key roles and is available to watch on Prime Video.
