Delhi: Yamuna water recedes; temperature sees a dip

The city woke up to a pleasant morning which was also slightly cold. The minimum temperature recorded in the morning was also one degree below season’s average.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Yamuna started receding on Thursday, but remained above the danger mark. The river was flowing at 205.17 metres at Old Railway Bridge on Thursday evening, above the danger mark of 204.83 metres. On Wednesday, it had reached 205.79 metres.

As the water level of Yamuna crossed the danger mark, 598 people have so far been evacuated from low-lying areas, an official statement stated Thursday. Apart from this, 1,391 tents have been erected in six districts of the city, where 98 people are staying, it added. 

The day remained sunny with light breeze making the weather pleasant. The maximum temperature touched 33 degrees Celsius on Thursday while the minimum was 22 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has forecast mainly clear sky in the coming days with no rainfall or thundershowers. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 93 per cent humidity. 

On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures settled at 32.4 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius. The National capital had received incessant rain starting Saturday that continued till Monday. 

According to the meteorological department, rain and snowfall in upper reaches and Western disturbance led to the showers and cold gusty winds. Delhi has recorded surplus rain this month, highest since 2011, when it rained 225.2 mm. This month, it has touched 224.5 mm, a surplus of over 105 per cent. On Monday, 16.3mm rainfall was recorded.
