Meet only married couple to top box office in 34 years; bigger stars than Alia-Ranbir, Deepika-Ranveer, Saif-Kareena

The year 2024 has seen an unusual occurrence at the box office. While there are several occasions of two films sharing the honours in terms of earnings and even cases of films helping each other (Barbenheimer was just last year), but it does not happen too often that a married couple headlines two films that are the top two grossers on the same weekend. This just happened last week with some unexpected headliners

The only married couple to top the box office in 34 years

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are truly Hollywood royalty. Reynolds has been riding high this year with the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. The fourth wall-breaking superhero extravaganza co-starring Hugh Jackman is the highest-grossing film of the year, having crossed $1 billion (Rs 8300 crore) at the global box office. Deadpool & Wolverine remains the best-performing film in the world, having grossed over $80 million (Rs 650 crore) in the weekend of August 9-11. However, it was challenged by an unexpected source. The drama It Ends With Us opened with a worldwide haul of over $75 million (Rs 600 crore). It Ends With Us stars Blake Lively, Ryan’s wife and an actress of note herself. With this, Ryan and Blake have topped the global box office, the first time a married couple has done this in years. The last time this happened was in 1990 when Bruce Willis’ Die Hard 2 and Demi Moore’s Ghost ruled the charts.

Reynolds and Blake Lively are both hugely successful movie stars. Ryan Reynolds, who was a rom com staple before he became Deadpool, is one of the richest and most successful actors in the world. His films have grossed over $6 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) at the box office, with much of it coming from the Deadpool franchise. Blake was a top TV star on Gossip Girl before transitioning to films successfully. Together, the two are worth $400 million (Rs 3300 crore) collectively, making them the richest actor couple in the world, and the most successful as well. This makes any Bollywood couple trail way behind them as none of the top married couples from Hindi films (Alia-Ranbir, Deepika-Ranveer, or Saif-Kareena) have collective net worth of over Rs 2500 crore.
