The grandest wedding of the year is here. Anant Ambani, son of Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, is marrying Radhika Merchant, daughter of diamond merchant Viren Merchant in Mumbai. The pre-wedding festivities have been underway in the Bandra-Kurla Complex for a week now, and the wedding itself is taking place on Friday. A slew of stars – international and local – have arrived at the venue, some to attend and others to perform. But while Justin Bieber and Luis Fonsi were the highlights, another international artiste has raised eyebrows with a Rs 25-crore price tag.

Nigerian pop sensation Rema arrived in Mumbai on Friday to perform at Anant and Radhika’s grand wedding. The 24-year-old singer is crediting to popularising Afrofave, a niche genre in Afrobeats music. Best known for his chartbusting hit Calm Down, Rema has been to India before and performed at concerts here. This time, however, he is in Mumbai for a private gig for the Ambani wedding guests. As per a Hindustan Times report, the singer has charged a jaw-dropping amount of Rs 25 crore for the performance, one of the highest at the event. In contrast, Indian rapper Badshah had charged Rs 4 crore for performing in the pre-wedding festivities, while pop icon Justin Bieber reportedly took home Rs 83 crore for his performance.

Who is Rema, the Calm Down singer?

Rema was born in 2000 in Benin City, Nigeria. He began rapping and singing while in secondary school and first performed in churches in his hometown in 2019. He gained recognition after a freestyle he posted on D’Prince’s song went viral. This led to his debut EP Rema the same year, which topped the charts in Nigeria. His song Dumebi from the album was even mentioned by former US President Barack Obama in his year-ending list of songs of the year. In 2022, his next EP Rave & Roses was released. Calm Down, a single in the album, reached number 3 in US Billboard and became a global sensation after a remix with Selena Gomez.
